Surfers take on Erin hurricane in Nazare

A surprising summer swell hit Nazare

26th of August 2025 was a very special day, as Erin Storm put together the conditions for Nazare to be surfable during the summer, which had never been seen at this time of the year before. Nic Von Rup -amongst the most famous big waves surfers- said himself that he “had never seen a winter swell like this during summer for over 20 years”. This unexpected news called big wave surfers from around the globe to this epic session like the Portuguese Joana Andrade and the French world champion Justine Dupont… and of course, we went there, as it was the perfect occasion for the Digital Surf Tribe team to witness and show you this one-of-a-kind and rare event!

How does it feels to watch big waves surfers in nazare?

What was the most shocking was of course, the 15 meter waves and the tiny surfers on it but also the strength of the waves crashing down so close to the shore. There was something poetic up on this hill, an energy that you can’t really describe but just feel and we tried to transport this feeling into a video that you can find bellow on this page.

How to see big waves surfers in Nazare?

The best spot to see the surfers is from the famous “Farol da Nazaré”, where you can also find a small museum underneath in the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, that emphasize every big surfing moments of this place. Nazaré is divided in two part; the south part is at sea level and the north part is up on a cliff; this is where you want to aim if you want to have the best view of the enormous waves. Easiest way to get to the Farol point of view is:

  • By car: park on the higher side of the city, as close as you can from the Farol -any free spot after the Burger King is good to take, especially on busy days-
  • By van: we recommend you to park further north, directly on the parking of the beach Praia do Norte, it’s less crowded, less walking and safer with big vehicules, although it is further from the surfers.
